Today, you might be seeing a different photo at the top of this newsletter than the usual picture of one Michael Carney (don’t worry, you’re still reading Spilled Thoughts).
Bear with me as I take a step back and tell you about an incredible individual (& of course number #1 dad in the whole world).
Fun fact: my father recently celebrated his 70th birthday and in true Bryan Carney fashion, we had to celebrate in style at Del Mar race track.
As we wrapped up at a fantastic day at the races with friends & family, I turned to my dad and immediately started to get choked up.
So many moments hit me but the most recent moments are the ones that have stuck with me, especially the battles he has faced these past few years.
Fast forward to today and he’s in fact still battling every single day, but I promise you when I tell you that you will never see Bryan Carney complain. There isn’t even a word to describe how resilient my dad has been these past few years.
This is someone who will drop anything at a moment’s notice and be there for anyone who needs him.
This is someone will always lend a helping hand without asking for anything ever in return.
This is someone who dropped everything to stay with me to make sure I was not alone during a hurricane my senior year of college in New Orleans (another story for another day but I will leave you with a fun photo I captured during hurricane season with no power):
This is someone who would drive up to Mountain View almost every week in 2014 to be there for me as I settled into my new job at Google and would drive me back up to the bay area whenever I visited home for a quick weekend trip.
This is someone who would pick up his phone any time day or night and chat with me for countless hours whenever I called to ask a question about career, life, and so much more.
My former manager used to say I had “Carneyisms,” which were phrases I would use in all my internal and external meetings. I would always smile whenever a “Carneyism was brought up” because most did not know that those “Carneyisms” are phrases I heard from my dad use when I was growing up.
I still use these “Carneyisms” to this day to honor someone who has taught me that an individual is only as good as their word, and as my dad always tells me even to this day, “Michael, if you’re say you’re going to do something, then you do it. We’re only as good as our word.”
At times, I didn’t always appreciate this advice but today, it is something I think about constantly.
Dad, I hope you know how much you mean to me and how much I appreciate everything you have done for me & mom. You’ve taught me so much and a newsletter post can’t even scratch the surface on how much you mean to us and everyone you’re helped over these past few years.
Love,
Michael
